Espresso bar & roaster · Pittsburgh · est. 2009

Coffee, made by hand.

Espresso pulled shot by shot, milk poured into art, beans roasted five miles from your cup. Three neighborhood bars. One obsession.

The ritual

Three moves, done thousands of times

"A mano" means "by hand" in Italian. No buttons, no batch shortcuts — every drink is built the way espresso bars in Italy have built them for a century.

Dialed in daily

Every morning we taste and adjust — grind, dose, and tamp tuned to that day's coffee, humidity, and roast.

No. 2 — Pull

Shot by shot

Espresso pulled one shot at a time and watched all the way down. If it's not right, it doesn't leave the bar.

Milk into art

Microfoam steamed to silk and poured free-hand. The latte art isn't decoration — it's proof the milk is right.

A Lawrenceville original,
now in three neighborhoods

Espresso a Mano opened on Butler Street in July 2009 — a true espresso bar, built by a barista who studied Italian and fell for the culture behind the counter. Pittsburgh City Paper named it the city's Best Coffeehouse, and the neighborhood made it a daily ritual.

Since then we've added bars in Squirrel Hill and Dormont, and in 2021 we started roasting every coffee ourselves, right here in Pittsburgh.

Sourcing & roasting

Excellent coffee is found,
then roasted in-house

We source sustainable green coffee from across the coffee-growing world through importers who build real relationships at origin — then roast it ourselves, in small batches, since 2021.
